SpaceX has made its ambitions in consumer telecommunications explicit: the company intends to build a terrestrial mobile network and poach customers directly from T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon. The announcement came during SpaceX's first-ever earnings call, where president Gwynne Shotwell and CEO Elon Musk fielded questions about the company's long-term strategy.
What SpaceX Actually Said
Shotwell was direct about the company's intentions:
"The spectrum that we purchased from EchoStar does have terrestrial components, so we definitely intend to build out the terrestrial component. You will have not only the capacity from the satellites themselves, but you will have a buildout of the terrestrial, basically the hardware and systems needed."
Musk added that SpaceX expects to "acquire quite a few" customers from the incumbent US carriers — language that signals an aggressive consumer play, not a niche enterprise offering.
The EchoStar Spectrum Play
The strategic foundation here is SpaceX's acquisition of EchoStar spectrum, which carries both satellite and terrestrial usage rights. This is significant. Most discussions of SpaceX's telecom ambitions have centered on Starlink's direct-to-cell satellite service — a product already partnering with T-Mobile to deliver coverage in dead zones. But terrestrial spectrum rights open a fundamentally different door: the ability to build ground-based cell infrastructure that competes with traditional carrier networks on their own terms.
Combining satellite and terrestrial coverage under one network would give SpaceX a structural advantage in rural and underserved areas where legacy carriers have underinvested for decades.

SpaceX would be attempting what Dish couldn't execute, but with significantly more capital, engineering talent, and vertical integration.
