From Terminal to Factory Floor

Warp, the New York-based agentic development platform, has spent 2026 methodically stacking the layers of a cloud software factory — and on Tuesday it snapped the final piece into place. The company introduced Warp Factories, a new infrastructure system designed to make deploying an end-to-end AI software pipeline as close to turnkey as possible.

The announcement is the logical endpoint of a product arc that began when Warp was just a Rust-based terminal. The company started in mid-2021 as a reimagined terminal, then pivoted when AI hit, integrating coding agents directly into the shell. But intensifying competition from Claude Code, Codex CLI, and Gemini CLI — all backed by massive tech companies — likely accelerated Warp's decision to open-source its core CLI tool in April and push further up the stack.

What a Software Factory Actually Means

The term "software factory" has been gaining traction across the industry, but Warp has been among its loudest champions. A cloud software factory is an automation loop around the software development lifecycle — triage, spec, implement, review, verify, ship, monitor — where a mix of agents and humans moves work forward at each step.

Warp describes itself as an open agentic development platform, with a software factory at its core that automates and orchestrates software development. The new Factories product is meant to make that architecture immediately deployable for any engineering team, without the months of custom infrastructure work that would normally precede it.

Built on Oz — and Designed for the Enterprise

Warp Factories sits on top of Oz, the cloud agent orchestration platform the company launched in February 2026. Oz is a cloud-based platform for running, managing, and orchestrating coding agents at scale, with visibility, auditability, and developer control built in — so organizations can deploy hundreds of coding agents in parallel without spending time and effort building custom infrastructure.

Since that launch, Warp has iterated aggressively on Oz based on direct enterprise feedback. Engineering leaders want to deploy fleets of cloud agents this year, but in a controlled, governed way — with the flexibility to choose different harnesses for different tasks and agents running on their own infrastructure, with full ownership of their data.

The company responded with a significant Oz update that made it the first control plane capable of running Claude Code, Codex, and Warp Agent side by side, adding cross-harness persistent memory, automatic multi-agent orchestration, and deeper enterprise controls.

"Companies shouldn't have to bet their future on a single model or harness," said Zach Lloyd, founder and CEO of Warp. "Right now, there's no real enterprise infrastructure for managing coding agents across models, tools, and environments. Oz is designed to be that control plane."

Real-World Proof Points

The software factory concept is not purely theoretical inside Warp's own walls. Rectangle Health used Oz to build a self-improving AI teammate — named Rex — that takes issues from triage through merged PR, currently shipping 35K+ lines of code per week and having written over 50% of its own code.

Warp itself is also a test bed for the model. The company uses Warp as a test bed for the factory concept while also maintaining it as a product used by nearly a million developers, many of whom rely on it as their primary development environment.

What This Means for Engineering Teams

The market timing is deliberate. As teams increase their use of coding agents, they quickly run into practical limits — industry research shows that while most organizations have adopted AI coding tools, fewer than one in ten have deployed agents in production. Warp Factories is a direct attempt to close that gap.

For startup founders and engineering leaders, the implications are concrete:

  • Faster time-to-factory: Rather than hand-rolling GitHub Actions pipelines and sandboxing infrastructure, teams can adopt a pre-built system with known governance properties.
  • Harness flexibility: Oz can serve as a unified control plane for Claude Code, Codex, and Warp Agent, all from a single dashboard — letting teams compare harness performance, assign the right one for each task, and maintain consistent access controls and audit logs across all three.
  • Incremental adoption: Companies are expected to start with specific use cases — certain types of issues or lower-risk repositories — places where they may be comfortable not having a human review every single line of code.

Warp has raised $73M led by Sequoia, is reportedly adding $1M in ARR every 5–6 days, and counts over 700,000 paid developers on its platform — a base that gives the company meaningful distribution for any infrastructure play.

With Warp Factories, the company is betting that the next competitive frontier in AI development tooling isn't the agent itself — it's who owns the factory floor it runs on.
