Ore Energy, a Dutch startup developing iron-air battery technology, has raised a $43 million Series A led by Plural and HV Capital, with participation from additional investors. The round brings the company's total funding to $81 million — a significant vote of confidence in long-duration energy storage (LDES) as a critical piece of Europe's energy transition.
What Iron-Air Actually Does
Founded in 2023 by CEO Aytac Yilmaz, COO Rutil Özdemir, and CSO Yaiza González García, Ore Energy is building batteries capable of storing energy for up to 500 hours — a timescale that makes conventional lithium-ion look like a sprint runner by comparison.
Iron-air technology works through a reversible rusting process: the battery absorbs oxygen from the air to discharge (rust forms), and releases oxygen to charge (rust reverses). The chemistry is inherently cheap — iron is abundant, non-toxic, and doesn't require the cobalt or lithium supply chains that make other battery chemistries geopolitically fraught.
The tradeoff has historically been energy density and round-trip efficiency, but startups like Ore Energy are betting that for grid-scale, multi-day storage, those limitations matter far less than cost per kilowatt-hour and raw duration.
Why This Round Matters Now
The timing isn't accidental. Europe is scrambling to accommodate AI data center expansion, which is reshaping electricity demand curves in ways that short-duration storage can't fully address. Data centers need reliable, around-the-clock power — and as renewable penetration increases, the grid's ability to deliver that without storage degrades.
Long-duration storage bridges the gap: it absorbs excess solar and wind generation during peak production windows, then dispatches it over days rather than hours. This makes it a natural complement to renewable buildout, rather than a competitor to it.
"If you look at the grid, what we're seeing is an increasing mismatch between when power is generated and when it's needed, and there just aren't many solutions that can store power over days or even weeks at scale," said CEO Yilmaz. "The economics of iron-air's underlying inputs mean it's a genuinely different proposition — and we think the market's starting to understand that."
Plural, which led the round, described Ore Energy as being "at the forefront of the critical infrastructure necessary for the modern energy transition."
The Competitive Landscape
Ore Energy isn't alone in this space. US-based Form Energy — arguably the category's most prominent name — has raised over $1 billion and recently signed agreements with several American utilities for multi-day iron-air deployments. EnerVault and a handful of other players are pursuing adjacent chemistries for similar applications.
What differentiates Ore Energy is its European base and focus. As the EU pushes toward its 2035 clean energy targets and data center demand escalates, the continent needs domestic LDES providers. Reliance on US-manufactured systems introduces both supply chain risk and geopolitical complexity — precisely the kind of dependency European policymakers are trying to reduce.
What This Means for the Market
For founders and operators in the energy or infrastructure space, Ore Energy's raise is a data point worth noting:
