Italy-based agritech startup Aflabox has closed a €1.35 million seed round to commercialise and industrially scale its AI-powered food safety monitoring platform. The equity funding came through FoodSeed, the agrifood accelerator within CDP Venture Capital's National Accelerator Network managed by Eatable Adventures, with additional participation from Farming Future — the National Agrifood Tech Technology Transfer Hub promoted by CDP Venture Capital SGR in partnership with ToSeed & Partners.
The Problem With Conventional Mycotoxin Testing
Mycotoxins — toxic compounds produced by molds that grow on crops including maize, wheat, and nuts — are a significant food safety risk, particularly in warm, humid climates. Traditional testing relies on specialised laboratories, costly equipment, and processing times of several hours to several days. For farmers, collection centres, and exporters operating under tight logistical timelines, that lag creates real risk: contaminated batches can move through the supply chain before results arrive.
Aflabox, founded by Luca Alinovi and Fabrizio Cardillo, is targeting that gap directly.
How the Platform Works
The Aflabox system is a field intelligence platform combining:
- Portable hardware with UV and white-light imaging
- On-device AI for rapid analysis
- Geolocated data collection tied to each scan
- Cloud-based dashboards for aggregated reporting and supply chain visibility
The platform delivers digital, shareable test results in under 90 seconds — a dramatic compression of the conventional testing window. Crucially, every scan becomes a geolocated data point. Over time, these aggregate into territorial contamination maps, enabling exporters, food processors, governments, and international organisations to make data-driven decisions about sourcing, trade readiness, and targeted food safety interventions.

The €1.35 million seed will be deployed across several parallel workstreams:
- Validation and certification of the Aflabox device
