Perplexity is pushing its agentic ambitions further with the expansion of Personal Computer — its locally run AI agent — to Windows. The move puts the tool in front of the vast majority of desktop users worldwide, given Windows' dominant market share.
What Personal Computer Actually Does
Launched for macOS in April 2025, Personal Computer is designed to function as a "general-purpose digital worker" — an agent that operates directly on your machine rather than through a cloud interface. It can:
- Access and manipulate local files and applications
- Create and edit documents and spreadsheets
- Execute multi-step tasks autonomously on the user's behalf
This is a meaningful distinction from most AI assistants, which live in a browser tab or chat window. Personal Computer is embedded at the OS level, giving it broader context and control.
Building on Microsoft Integrations
The Windows launch doesn't come out of nowhere. In May 2025, Perplexity rolled out Personal Computer integrations for Microsoft 365 apps and Teams — plugging the agent into the productivity suite that millions of enterprise users already rely on daily.
The new Windows-native version aims to close the remaining gap: while the 365 integrations handled work inside Microsoft's apps, Personal Computer for Windows extends that reach to the entire desktop environment.
Why This Matters for Founders and Operators
For startup teams and marketers, this signals a broader shift in how AI tooling is being positioned — from chat-based copilots to autonomous agents that control your local environment. A few implications worth tracking:
- Workflow automation is moving off the cloud. Locally run agents reduce latency and keep sensitive data on-device, which matters for teams handling confidential materials.
- The competition for OS-level AI real estate is heating up. Microsoft is building Copilot deeper into Windows, Apple is integrating Apple Intelligence across macOS and iOS, and now Perplexity — a startup — is competing directly at the system layer.
- Adoption friction is dropping. By targeting Windows first with 365 integrations and now a full desktop agent, Perplexity is meeting enterprise users exactly where they already work.
The Bigger Picture
Perplexity has been moving aggressively beyond its search roots. Personal Computer represents its clearest bet yet on the agentic AI category — systems that don't just answer questions but take actions. The Mac-first, then Microsoft integrations, then Windows rollout suggests a deliberate sequencing strategy: prove the concept on a smaller install base, then scale to the dominant platform.
The company faces stiff competition. OpenAI's Operator, Anthropic's Claude with computer use, and Microsoft's own Copilot are all pursuing similar OS-level agent capabilities. But Perplexity's tight integration with both Windows and Microsoft's productivity stack gives it a credible angle — particularly with business users who live inside 365 all day.
